Project Overview
Project purpose
The Airport Station area has a unique combination of commercial and residential properties. Current road conditions are not suitable for the existing level of pedestrian and bicycle use in the area.
This project seeks to create roadway and sidewalk designs that will:
- Enhance the safety and experience of people walking and biking.
- Establish a clear visual identity for the Airport Station area.
- Help implement the recently updated vision for the area.
Project location
Improvements will focus on the area immediately surrounding the Airport Link Light Rail Station (Airport Station area) and includes sections of South 176th Street, 32nd Avenue S, and South 180th Street (see Project Area map). Construction will start as early as 2023.
More information about each segment is shown on the Project Segments page.

Project process
Community members identified lighting and safe places to walk and improvements to the aesthetics of the area as key priorities for this project. The project team has created a design that addresses these issues and includes additional improvements. A City Council-appointed Ad Hoc Committee made up of local business and community members has also met with the project team to provide input on the urban design elements shown on this online open house. Your feedback will help inform the next step of this process as the project team finalizes the design.
Project background
In 2020, the City completed the City Center Plan Update Phase 1 Vision Report that covers this area. The Vision Report relied heavily on input from the business and residential communities to create a plan to improve pedestrian and transit corridors and create a consistent visual identity for future projects in the Airport Station area. The Vision report also identified the Airport Station Area Pedestrian Improvement Project as a priority project.
